Trustees with the San Luis Coastal school district will hire a consultant to conduct the upcoming search for a new superintendent.
San Luis Coastal Unified School District Superintendent Ed Valentine announced in February that he will retire in July after more than five years in the post.
The district seeks proposals from private firms that specialize in recruiting school administrators. The deadline for bids is March 19.
District staff recommends the trustees create a subcommittee to review the proposals. The school board is expected to select a firm to lead the search later this month.
In 2004 the district paid $25,000 to a search firm that helped the school board sift through 22 applicants before selecting Valentine.
The cost of the new search wont be known until proposals are turned in to the district.
Public and employee input on the search will be included in the process.
Valentine, 61, was hired by the school district in 1997 as the assistant superintendent of educational services. He was selected as superintendent in March 2005.
Before San Luis Coastal hired Valentine in 1997, he served as curriculum director for seven years in Escondido Union School District near San Diego.
