Lorenzo Keeler, a senior guard for the Cal Poly men’s basketball team, was named to the All-Big West Conference first team on Monday.
The 6-foot-2 Escondido native led the Mustangs with 16 points per game, sixth in the conference, and shot 85.8 percent from the free-throw line, second-best in the Big West. Among Keeler’s most memorable games this year were pouring in 38 points during a 95-81 win over UC Irvine on Jan. 4 and tying a school record by sinking 16 of 16 free-throw attempts during a 102-89 win at Hawaii on Feb. 20.
Regular-season co-champion UC Santa Barbara had sophomore guard Orlando Johnson win the league’s player of the year award, while Gauchos coach Bob Williams was named the coach of the year. UC Davis’ Julian Welch was voted the freshman of the year.
The rest of the all-conference first team was comprised of Cal State Fullerton’s Gerard Anderson, UC Riverside’s Kyle Austin, Pacific’s Joe Ford and Long Beach State’s T.J. Robinson.
Cal Poly placed point guard Kyle Odister on the all-freshmen team. Odister started 16 contests, posting eight points per game, and finished fourth in the league in 3-point accuracy at 44.7 percent. Teammate David Hanson, a sophomore forward, was named an honorable mention after averaging 10.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per outing. The Mustangs (11-18, 7-9 Big West) will open the conference tournament as the No. 6 seed at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday against seventh-seeded UC Irvine (14-17, 6-10) at the Anaheim Convention Center.
MEN’S GOLF
Cal Poly was in 13th among 16 teams at the Fresno State-hosted Lexus Classic with five holes remaining in the second round of the par-71 tournament at San Joaquin Country Club. The second round was suspended because of darkness and will resume at 8 this morning, followed by the final round.
Washington leads the way at a four-over-par total, with the Mustangs carding a five-person 39-over mark. The Mustangs’ leader is Pace Johnson, tied for 20th at 1 over. Cal Poly’s Bryan Pierce, an Arroyo Grande High grad, is tied for 55th at 8 over.
