A San Luis Obispo County woman who along with her husband has fostered 22 children and adopted eight was honored Monday in Sacramento by Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee as the 2010 Woman of the Year for the 33rd Assembly District.

Marylud Baldwin has been a foster parent and adoptive parent in the county for several years, according to a news release from Blakeslee’s office.

“Marylud is a truly inspiring woman. She has opened her heart and home to give children hope, a family and a future,” said Blakeslee, R-San Luis Obispo.

Baldwin is an active member and former president of the local Foster Parent Association. She also serves on the California State Foster Parent Association Inc.

Baldwin is a special education professor for Cal Poly’s master’s degree and credential programs. She is also a “cuddler” at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit.

North Coast

Highway 1 has reopened for daytime travel south of Gorda, but motorists may be delayed up two hours as crews continue to clear a landslide that closed the road early Friday.

The road will be closed each night from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. Caltrans crews reassess slide conditions each morning to determine if traffic can go through the area safely.

All businesses in the area remain open to the public, including Hearst Castle, about 20 miles to the south.

Call 888-836-0866 toll-free for information on road conditions in Big Sur from Cambria to Carmel, or go to the Caltrans road information Web site at www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi.

Arroyo Grande

The City Council tonight will consider a proposal for a community recreation center on a city-owned 5-acre parcel near the Woman’s Club of Arroyo Grande and the city’s Community Center.

If approved, the development agreement would allow the Five Cities Community Service Foundation to begin expanding its fundraising efforts. Foundation members have estimated the project will cost about $10 million.

The council established a goal more than a decade ago for a community center. In 2006, the council approved a 50-year lease with the foundation for the property at 400 W. Branch St.

The proposed 53,712-square-foot center would include courts for basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer, a climbing wall and a running track, multipurpose rooms and offices.

The council meeting starts at 7 p.m. tonight at 215 E. Branch St.
