Sports Roundup: Cal Poly women's tennis team wins again

Thanks in part to another stellar performance at doubles, the Cal Poly women’s tennis team pulled off its second straight one-point win over a Big West Conference opponent with a 4-3 victory over Pacific on Sunday.

In an effort that has become routine, the Mustangs won the doubles point for the 10th time in 11 dual matches this season.

The team of senior Steffi Wong and freshman Alexa Lee, No. 59 in the country in the NCAA Division I rankings, remained unbeaten on the season with an 8-2 victory over the Tigers’ No. 2 team.

Cal Poly (9-2, 5-1 Big West) pulled off a 4-3 win over visiting UC Santa Barbara on Friday.

The difference in the two matches came at singles. Whereas the Mustangs won the top three singles matches against the Gauchos and lost each of the bottom three, the results were reversed against Pacific (4-9, 1-3 Big West).

Suzie Matzenauer lost a three-set showdown with the Tigers’ No. 1 player, Jenifer Widjaja, and Cal Poly’s No. 2, Brittany Blalock lost in three sets, too.

Lee and Jocelyn Davis won in straight sets for the Mustangs, and teammate Diane Filip won in three. Bakersfield Rachel Thompson allowed two runs in five innings and Alyssa Giordanengo homered as Cuesta College beat Bakersfield 10-2 in the Bakersfield Classic on Sunday.

Giordanengo went 3 for 3 with the homer, four RBI, two runs and a stolen base for the Cougars (5-11-1). Brittani Gregory was 4 for 4 with two runs, and Laura Haynes was 2 for 4 with four runs.

Surprise. Ariz. The Cal Poly baseball team’s final scheduled game in the Coca-Cola Classic was cancelled because of rain and will not be made up.

The Mustangs (4-6) were 1-2 in the round robin tournament and were to play Oregon State in the finale.

San Diego The Cal Poly softball team had its final two games in the San Diego Classic rained out, including Sunday’s scheduled contest against Wisconsin.

The Mustangs (5-6) will not have either game made up and finish with a 2-1 record in the tournament.

Daytona Beach, Fla. Paso Robles native Jake Zemke, making his debut for team owner Michael Jordan, won the AMA Pro American SuperBike race at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday aboard the No. 54 Suzuki.

In a tight five-bike duel, Zemke slipped past Tommy Hayden coming to the white flag in the 15-lap event to give Jordan his first AMA SuperBike victory.
