Prep Roundup: Big inning lifts San Luis Obispo to win in softball opener

San Luis Obispo High catcher Karina Smyth wasted little time getting back into a midseason form that saw her earn All-PAC 7 and all-county honors last season.

Smyth had two hits, including a two-run double, as the Tigers softball team shut out Lompoc 7-0 in a season-opening win Friday.

With the game scoreless entering the bottom of the sixth, Smyth and Leah O’Reilly each doubled in two runs as San Luis Obispo plated all seven of its runs.

“This was a well-played game for being each team’s first of the year,” Tigers coach Mike Lee said. ”I didn’t really know how we were going to play, but we did a lot of good things.”

Kelsey Gibbs scattered four hits in six innings, and Andrea Reynolds pitched a scoreless seventh.

“We were just fortunate enough to come up with the big hits,” Lee said.

Atascadero 2, St. Joseph 0

Ashley Dooley’s two-run double in the first inning proved to be the game- winner for Atascadero as pitchers Jill Johnson and Jessie Hufstetler combined on a six-hit shutout.

Johnson struck out three in four innings, and Hufstetler added four more in three innings of relief.

Dooley and Ashlee Reusche had two hits each for Atascadero (1-0).

Morro Bay 9, Nipomo 4

Sophomore Kylie Gacad was 3 for 5 with three stolen bases and four runs for the Pirates (1-0), while Tia Gacad added a 1-for-2, three-walk performance with two stolen bases in the win.

Candace Milbourne struck out two batters and gave up a walk and four earned runs in five innings to pick up the win.

Katie Fugate had a two-RBI triple for the Titans (0-1).

Paso Robles 11, Santa Maria 1

Kellie Reynolds pitched six innings and had seven strikeouts and two walks for the Bearcats (1-0).

Katie Hartman, Jennifer Hernandez and Lauren Redberg all had a triple for Paso Robles.

Redberg came in to close in the seventh inning for Paso Robles, striking out the side.

WRESTLING

Arroyo Grande’s Raul Uc (135 pounds) won his first two matches at the state finals in Bakersfield before falling in the third round.

Uc is one of four wrestlers still alive in the consolation bracket, including three wrestlers from Atascadero.

Michael Clemmensen (103), Josh Lowe (135) and Elijah Jackson (145) all remain alive in their respective consolation brackets for the Greyhounds having won two matches apiece.

The finals conclude today in Bakersfield.

BASEBALL

Arroyo Grande 12, Templeton 2

Arroyo Grande, which had 10 hits, scored eight runs in the third inning.

Kyle Raubinger and Mitch Hollingsworth hit two doubles each for Arroyo Grande.

Daniel Wheeler had a home run, one of just two hits for Templeton.

Colton Haynes pitched two shutout innings in the fourth and fifth for Arroyo Grande.

Nipomo 3, Santa Ynez 1

Mark Baker allowed one run in five innings, and Ryan McNeil had three hits and two RBI as Nipomo won its season opener. McNeil also threw two shutout innings from the mound, striking out three.

Cole Holloway added a double for the Titans (1-0).

Rio Mesa 4, San Luis Obispo 0

The Tigers were shut out in their season opener at the Easton Tournament.

Louie Summer and Connor Mulvaney had two hits apiece for San Luis Obispo, while David Murillo allowed four runs in a complete- game outing.

Paso Robles 6, Cabrillo 5, 8 innings

Paso Robles led 4-0 until the sixth inning and held on to win in eight innings.

Thomas Bernal pitched five shutout innings for the Bearcats and hit a two-run home run in the third inning.

Paso Robles’ Elias Stokes and Mac Stuart each hit a double for the Bearcats.

St. Joseph 5, Atascadero 3

Bryce Cherry and Spencer Ruggles each had a double for Atascadero.

BOYS TENNIS

Arroyo Grande 9, Cate of Carpinteria 9 (70-69 games tiebreaker)

The contest was tied 3-3 and then 6-6 before being deadlocked at the finish.

“We needed everyone on the team to contribute in all of their games, it was so close,” Arroyo Grande coach Lori Hollister said of the narrow decision. “Everybody pulled through in tight games.”

The Eagles (2-0) got a pair of strong performances from freshmen, as Eli Whittle claimed 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 victories, and Sean Hollister won 7-5, 6-0, 2-6.

In doubles, Ian Moynagh and Jordan Hayashi took two of three matchups.

Paso Robles 14, Templeton 4

A pair of Bearcats swept three singles matchups. Matthew Pridgen won 6-0, 6-0, 6-3, while Will Stark won 6-0, 6-0, 6-1.

Paso Robles (2-0) enjoyed similar success in doubles, as Skip Moses and Cody Murdock won 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, while the tandem of Scott Weller and Garrett Nelson dispatched their foes 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.

Dos Pueblos 12, San Luis Obispo 6

Coco Angulo and James Campbell won two of three singles matches apiece for the Tigers (0-2).

The doubles team of Tomas Jimenez and Travis Cannon was the only San Luis Obispo team to claim a set.

“For all six of my doubles guys, this has been their first varsity experience,” Tigers coach Ken Peet said. “We’re as inexperienced as we’ve been ever, so we’re going to take some lumps this year.”

BOYS GOLF

Paso Robles 222, Morro Bay 230

Wes Levanduski was the medalist for Paso Robles, (2-0) carding a 38, and Kenny Romero finished third after shooting a 41 over nine hole at Morro Bay Golf Course.
