Prep Roundup: Torres wins three events in leading San Luis Obispo to track win over Atascadero

The San Luis Obispo High girls track and field team began the 2010 campaign the same way it ended last season — in dominating fashion.

The two-time defending CIF-Southern Section Division 3 champion Tigers beat Atascadero 83-53 in a PAC 7 dual meet Thursday in Atascadero.

Abrianna Torres won three events for San Luis Obispo, including the 100-meter hurdles in 16.53 seconds and the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches.

She also won the long jump with a mark of 17-0.

Mikaylah Williams won the 400 and 800 for San Luis Obispo, while Jessica Belingheri took the 100 and 300 hurdles.

The Greyhounds claimed a narrow victory on the boys side, holding on for a 69-67 win.

Dalton Spinas claimed both the discus (120-1) and shot put (49-0) for Atascadero while Kyler Snyder won the 100 in 11.92.

Spencer Lemons took three events for the Tigers, winning all the jumping events. He captured the triple jump (40-5), the high jump (5-10) and the long jump (19-5).

Boys: Paso Robles 84, Pioneer Valley 49; Girls: Paso Robles 115, Pioneer Valley 21

Aleksander Koch won the high jump (5-10), 110 hurdles (15.7), 300 hurdles (41.9) and tied for first in the long jump (18-5) for the Bearcats.

Paso Robles’ Devin Upson tied Koch for the long jump crown and also claimed the triple jump (39-3).

On the girls side, Tess Rountree won the high jump (4-10), the 100 hurdles (16.2) and 300 hurdles (50.4).

Maddy Cline swept the girls distance events, taking the 800 in 2:30, the 1,600 in 5:27.42 and the 3,200 in 13:08.

Boys: Nipomo 89.5, Righetti 45.5; Girls: Nipomo 101, Righetti 34

Nipomo’s Kevin Britt, a member of the winning 400 relay team, also claimed the 100 in 11.11 seconds, the 200 in 22.78 and was second in the long jump with a mark of 20-2½.

Jake Ryan won the shot put and discus for the Titans, while teammate Alex Ortiz was second.

On the girls side, Amber Britt won the 400 in 1:05.78, tied for the win in the high jump at 4-10 and was a member of Nipomo’s 400 winning relay team, which clocked 51.72.

Melanie Teixeira, Heather Hawes and Mikaila Davis swept the top three spots in the throwing events for Nipomo.

BOYS TENNIS

Arroyo Grande 15, Cabrillo 3

Eli Whittle led Arroyo Grande, sweeping three singles sets without dropping a game, while Sean Hollister also won all three sets.

The Eagles were playing their first dual of the season after rain washed out two previous matches, and coach Lori Hollister said the Eagles were just happy to be on the court.

Kenji McKinstry and Brent Moore swept their doubles sets, as did teammates Ian Moynagh and Jordan Hayashi.

Santa Ynez 12, San Luis Obispo 6

Coco Anoylo and James Campbell won two sets each for the Tigers (0-1).

San Luis Obispo struggled in doubles play, claiming just two sets after playing with three teams that had yet to see action at the varsity level.

Tigers coach Ken Peet said much of the fault had to do with service errors.

“It was a very close matches but we had way too many double faults,” Peet said.

Paso Robles 12, St. Joseph 6

Freshman Cooper Austin, playing in his first dual, swept three singles sets for Paso Robles.

Matthew Perdgeon also swept for the Bearcats, dropping just three total games.

The doubles team of Scott Weller and Garrett Nelson swept three set for Paso Robles, which will host Templeton today.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Paso Robles 3, Santa Maria 0

The Bearcats swept the Saints 28-26, 25-15, 25-9 in Santa Maria.

Cheyne Hayes led the Bearcats (2-0) with 14 kills and Angel Guevara had 12 digs.

Nipomo 3, Morro Bay 1

The Pirates dropped a 26-24, 16-25, 26-24, 25-21 decision to visiting Nipomo.

Gordon Kirby led Morro Bay (0-2) with six blocks, and Jack Benedict had 27 assists.

BOYS GOLF

Templeton 235, Coast Union 315

Seth Hughes was the medalist for Templeton (1-1 LPL) after carding a 41 in the Eagles’ home win.

Templeton had finishers in the top three spots, with Billy Hurst in second place with a 42, and Spencer Elliot was third with a score of 43.
