Prep Roundup: Atascadero's Hinton to throw for Sacramento State

Atascadero High track and field star Markita Hinton has committed to continue her career at Sacramento State, Atascadero announced Tuesday.Hinton, a senior, will sign a National Letter of Intent this morning to compete on scholarship for the Hornets.This past season, Hinton finished eighth in the girls shot put at the state championships with a final-day toss of 40 feet, 11¼ inches. It was her first state meet. The previous day, she had a personal-best mark of 43-9¾.Every year she has progressed, Greyhounds coach David Donati said. Were hoping for great things out of her (as a senior).As a sophomore, the 6-foot Hinton also earned all-San Luis Obispo County honorable mention status in basketball, averaging 9.2 points, five rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. She elected to sit out this basketball season in order to focus solely on track and field.BOYS VOLLEYBALLSanta Ynez 3, Arroyo Grande 1The Eagles (0-1) claimed the first set 25-15 but lost their momentum and the following three sets 25-19, 25-19, 26-24.Sean Reed had a team-high 10 kills for Arroyo Grande, and teammate Sebastian Clissen had six blocks.Paso Robles 3, Morro Bay 1Cheyne Hayes led the Bearcats with a game-high 23 kills, nine assists and seven aces in a back-and-forth four-set battle as Paso Robles won 25-16, 22-25, 28-26, 25-18.Paso Robles Kodie Redonogo added 19 assists and six kills.Morro Bays Gordon Kirby had nine kills and teammate Jack Benedict added 16 assists and five aces.BOYS GOLFAtascadero 197, Templeton 248Atascaderos Austin Kaiser shot a one-under 34 in a season-opening dual that was shortened to nine holes because of rain.Dalton Womack carded a 38 for the Greyhounds, and Austin Jensen finished with 40 on the par-35 front nine.
Tanner Westbrook led Templeton, carding a 42.San Luis Obispo 397, St. Joseph 400Playing in his first match for the Tigers, freshman Adam Zakaria had a team-low score of 74.
Zakaria finished one shot behind St. Josephs Chris Blystone, who captured medalist honors with a two-over 73 at Dairy Creek.All the players gave it their best effort, which was extremely difficult under the (rainy) conditions, San Luis Obispo coach Gary Etheredge said.Kelton Porter added a 79 for the Tigers.BOYS TENNISSeveral area schools had their matches rescheduled or canceled because of weather.Arroyo Grandes match with Santa Ynez was postponed and will be made up at 3:30 p.m. today in Arroyo Grande.Morro Bays home match with Paso Robles was rained out. The two teams havent determined whether the match will be made up.San Luis Obispos match at Cabrillo was canceled.
