Atascadero High track and field star Markita Hinton has committed to continue her career at Sacramento State, Atascadero announced Tuesday.

Hinton, a senior, will sign a National Letter of Intent this morning to compete on scholarship for the Hornets.

This past season, Hinton finished eighth in the girls shot put at the state championships with a final-day toss of 40 feet, 11¼ inches. It was her first state meet. The previous day, she had a personal-best mark of 43-9¾.

“Every year she has progressed,” Greyhounds coach David Donati said. “We’re hoping for great things out of her (as a senior).”

As a sophomore, the 6-foot Hinton also earned all-San Luis Obispo County honorable mention status in basketball, averaging 9.2 points, five rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. She elected to sit out this basketball season in order to focus solely on track and field.

Atascadero’s Austin Kaiser shot a one-under 34 in a season-opening dual that was shortened to nine holes because of rain.

San Luis Obispo 397, St. Joseph 400

Playing in his first match for the Tigers, freshman Adam Zakaria had a team-low score of 74. Zakaria finished one shot behind St. Joseph’s Chris Blystone, who captured medalist honors with a two-over 73 at Dairy Creek.

“All the players gave it their best effort, which was extremely difficult under the (rainy) conditions,” San Luis Obispo coach Gary Etheredge said.

Kelton Porter added a 79 for the Tigers.

BOYS TENNIS

Several area schools had their matches rescheduled or canceled because of weather.

Arroyo Grande’s match with Santa Ynez was postponed and will be made up at 3:30 p.m. today in Arroyo Grande.

Morro Bay’s home match with Paso Robles was rained out. The two teams haven’t determined whether the match will be made up.

San Luis Obispo’s match at Cabrillo was canceled.
