Prep Roundup: Nipomo volleyball players honored

Nipomo High girls volleyball players Cristina Ozzimo and Sarah Stahl were recently named to the PrepVolleyball. com Frosh 59 list, a list that annually honors the top freshmen players in the country who were varsity starters for their teams.

This past season, as Nipomo went 2-20 overall, the 5-foot-4 Ozzimo, a starting setter, had 71 digs and 25 aces en route to an all-PAC 7 honorable mention, while the 5-2 Stahl, who saw time at libero and defensive specialist, had 93 digs.

“Usually PrepVolleyball.com honors freshmen from teams that win their regional or state championships,” Nipomo coach Erin Alves said in a news release. “So to have two of my players recognized from a school that didn’t have a winning record is remarkable.

“Also, both Cristina and Sarah are relatively short for volleyball players, so most of their accomplishments are based on sheer athleticism.

The duo finished third this past summer in the Southern California Beach Volleyball rankings.

“The sky is really the limit with these two girls,” Alves said.

BOYS BASKETBALL

North County Christian 65, Maricopa 42

Josh Feld led the Crusaders (16-8, 9-0 Coast Valley League) with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Caleb Katches scored 18 points for North County Christian, which is nearing completion of its fifth consecutive unbeaten year in CVL play, while Daniel Katches added 13 and Joe Honeycutt dished out six assists.

———— GIRLS BASKETBALL

North County Christian 69, Maricopa 31

Cristy Scarson scored 24 points for the Crusaders.

Brianna Feld added 23 points and six assists for North County Christian (14-5, 7-3 CVL), with teammate Kelsey Paulus pulling down a game-high 20 rebounds.

North County Christian outscored Maricopa 32-18 in the first half and was never challenged.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lompoc 3, Morro Bay 1

Macey Burgeson scored the lone goal for the Pirates (2-11 Los Padres League).

Morro Bay coach Kirsten Larsen said she was pleased with the team’s defensive effort, including the play of defender Sami Caravallo.

“She played an excellent game on defense,” Larsen said. “She made several pass breakups and stopped them from getting quite a number of shots and scoring opportunities.”

BOYS SOCCER

Lompoc 4, Morro Bay 2

Adam Valine scored two goals for Morro Bay (10-9-1, 5-5 LPL) in a season-ending loss.

Valine gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead midway through the second half, but Lompoc would score the final three goals.

“We worked very hard this year and played a great game, and I am excited for next year,” Morro Bay coach Tomas Arreola said.

Santa Ynez 2, Templeton 0

Seniors Miles Casalla, Justin Clarke, Tyler Lewis and Tim Youngdale played their last match for the Eagles (1-19, 0-12 LPL).

Jonah Yamagata made 13 saves for Templeton.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Arroyo Grande 14, San Luis Obispo 2

Kim Johnson scored four goals for the Eagles (25-3, 11-0), who remained unbeaten in PAC 7 play.

Briana Lippert made nine saves for Arroyo Grande, the top-ranked team in Division IV of the CIF-Southern Section.

Kim Bellis and Kennedy Peters scored for the Tigers (12-10, 8-4), while Andie Judson made eight saves.

Atascadero 10, Righetti 9

Katie Patterson scored three goals for the Greyhounds (15-9, 7-4 PAC 7), who remained deadlocked with San Luis Obispo for second place in league play.

Justine Cooper, Erin Hasenkamp and Bailey Kelly added two goals apiece for Atascadero.

Nipomo 22, Pioneer Valley 1

Julia Tatarian led Nipomo (7-18, 4-8 PAC 7) with a game-high eight goals in Nipomo’s season-ending victory. Shanae Lauridsen scored five goals for the Titans and Jenny Cardenas tallied three.

Ashlee McCall and Ambria Edison had a combined four saves and shut out Pioneer Valley through the first half.

Morro Bay 8, Santa Maria 6; Cabrillo 13, Morro Bay 1

In their first game at the Los Padres League prelims, the Pirates avenged a recent 11-7 loss to the Saints.

Megan Long led Morro Bay with five goals. Dani Churchill made five saves in goal, where Kerri Novick also saw time, making three saves for Morro Bay (6-12, 2-5 LPL).

Melodie Marcy scored the lone goal against the Conquistadores, the fifth-ranked team in Division IV.

Morro Bay will play Santa Ynez on Thursday for third place in the LPL Tournament.
