  Hacks on the bench

  I have a question for Kirby K. Gordon regarding his letter (“Judiciary’s purview,” April 7), expressing how he read with “profound sadness” President Barack Obama’s comments about our unelected Supreme Court and the present overreaching of their power.

  Was he equally filled with “profound sadness” when former President George W. Bush said, The Supreme Court “is the only branch of the government that is unelected and whose officers serve for life. Unfortunately, some justices give into temptation and make law instead of interpreting it. Such judicial lawlessness is a threat to our democracy — and it has to stop.”

  Discard drugs safety

  The members of the San Luis Obispo County Health Commission commend and recognize all seven city police departments and the three sheriff’s substations for their willingness to act as convenient drop off points for Operation Medicine Cabinet. This nonprofit program provides our residents with convenient locations to safely dispose of unwanted medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, at no charge.

  Ignorant remarks

  I am utterly astounded by the remarks of Geraldo Rivera about Trayvon Martin being to blame for his own death because he wore a hoodie. It is an extraordinarily ignorant comment. Recently, I was at Arroyo Grande High School when school let out, and 99 percent of the students came out with hoodies, protecting themselves from the cold March wind. Hoodies are worn across the nation!

  Geraldo and Rush Limbaugh should both be banished from the airwaves. The millions they make should be donated to The Children’s Hunger Program.

  Size and scope

  The Tribune ran a story Tuesday regarding the the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District and its projected budget shortfall. To begin with, I thought air pollution control came under the direct aegis of the county government. Why is it a separate district? Does that not increase cost of operation?

  The article went on to say that the organization had 24 employees. What do all of those people do relative to pollution control? With a budget of $4.4 million, reportedly most of which goes toward salaries and benefits, it would appear that the air pollution control district is a very good place, from a dollar point of view, to work.

  Romney as Scrooge

  In Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” Scrooge is asked to donate to help the poor.

  He asks, “Are there prisons?” and is answered that there are. “And the Union workhouses? Are they still in operations?” Again he is answered yes. “The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour?” Yes, he is told. Then Scrooge says, “Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course. I’m very glad to hear it,” because it was affirmed that the “safety net” of that time was in operation — the poor had what they needed, and there was no need to contribute money.
