College Roundup: Cal Poly men lose fourth in a row

Pacific scores first 12 points of the game in a 67-61 win in Stockton

The Cal Poly men’s basketball team dropped its fourth straight decision, a 67-61 defeat to Pacific on Saturday in Stockton.

The Tigers (15-7, 8-2 Big West Conference) scored the first 12 points of the game, holding the Mustangs (8-14, 5-5) scoreless through the game’s first six minutes.

Cal Poly roared back to take a 26-25 lead on David Hanson’s 3-pointer with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.

Shawn Lewis scored a team-high 16 points for Cal Poly, while Lorenzo Keeler added 13 with eight rebounds and five assists. Hanson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Pacific went on a 23-7 run bridging the halves to pull away. The Mustangs drew within five points within the final minute but could get no closer.

Demetrece Young paced the Tigers with 18 points.

Cuesta 96, Oxnard 72

Roger Guardia scored a game-high 34 points for the Cougars (22-5, 8-1 Western State Conference).

Guardia had 29 points after the break as Cuesta outscored Oxnard 64-35 in the second half.

“This was a strange game of blowout runs for both teams,” Cuesta head coach Rusty Blair said. “But we spurted ahead in the second half.”

Former Templeton High standout Seth Koenig scored 18 for Cuesta, while Xavier Mylleville added 16 and Phillip Jiminez poured in 14.

Christian Koutras scored seven points and dished out a game-high 10 assists. The Cougars distributed 24 assists as a team while Oxnard had just nine.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Oxnard 47, Cuesta 46

Raleigh O’Brien scored a game-high 12 points for the Cougars (4-18, 1-8 WSC) Oxnard (14-7, 5-3) led 0-16 at halftime and withstood a Cuesta rally to pick up the victory.

Kayla Cribbs added eight points for the Cougars.

WRESTLING

Oregon State 21, Cal Poly 18

The Beavers (18-1, 6-1) came from behind on the strength of a fall by Colby Covington at 174 pounds after trailing 14-6.

Cal Poly won three of the first five matches, including Filip Novachkov’s 20-5 major decision over Mike Mangrum at 141 and Nick Fisher’s pin of RJ Pena at 149.

But Oregon State claimed four of the next five matches to claim the dual.

Also winning for the Mustangs (7-4, 4-2) was Chase Pami, who scored a 14-5 major decision against Keegan Davis at 157.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal Poly’s home tennis match with Santa Clara was postponed because of bad weather and wet courts.

A revised match date will be announced when both teams have agreed upon a time.
