The Cayucos Library is hosting a three-day book sale Friday through Feb. 14 before it moves to its new, larger space.

The current location is a rented space on a month-to-month lease, but the new library, which will be at 490 Birch Ave., can accommodate more technology, said Gretchen Ross, president of Friends of the Cayucos Library.

Hardcover books will cost $1, and paperbacks are 50 cents. Furnishings such as shelves, chairs and tables will also be for sale. The sale will be from noon to 4 p.m. Friday, and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The main goal of the sale is to reduce the amount of books and furniture that would be transported from the old location to the new, but also to raise money that would help support the library’s collection, according to Ross.

The Cayucos Library will be fully operational at its new location March 23.

Cuesta College

Free help applying for student aid will be available for high school seniors from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cuesta College.

Financial experts will be available to assist students in applying for federal and state aid. Students who participate in the “Cash for College Night” will also be considered for a bonus $1,000 scholarship.

Students are asked to bring the following: Social Security number and driver’s license, their parent’s federal income tax return or W-2 forms from 2008 or 2009, records of untaxed income, their own W-2 forms, bank account records, business records and a list of colleges of interest.

The workshop will be held in building 3400 on Cuesta’s San Luis Obispo campus. Assistance will also be available in Spanish.

North Coast

Daytime road construction along Highway 1 in the Big Sur area continues with the installation of horizontal drains on Highway 1 one mile north of Ragged Point.

One-way traffic control flaggers will continue Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and until 2 p.m. Fridays. Work is expected to be done by the end of February.

North of the Monterey County line, overnight closures because of roadway erosion along Highway 1 nine miles north of Ragged Point have been halted. Road work will continue during daytime hours with reverse one-way traffic control through April.

The project to prevent the Big Sur River from cutting into an embankment by the Pfeiffer State Park entrance is complete. — Amy Dempsey

Grover Beach

A Valentine’s Swing Dance will be hosted by the Grover Beach Community Library on Feb. 14 at the Grover City Grange Hall at 370 S. 13th St. from 6 to 9 p.m.

The informal event will feature a gourmet barbecue hamburger dinner with all of the trimmings and a root beer float for dessert, which is included in the price of the ticket. Wine and beer, as well as meat and vegetarian burgers, will be served.

The local Jimmy Enos combo will play a mixture of swing and soft rock for dancing.

Proceeds will go to the the library’s annual cost of operation, including rent, utilities and maintenance.

The library, at 240 N. 9th St. in Grover Beach, is a nonprofit, free library operated by volunteers and private donations. Library President Nan Fowler said the dance encourages participants to meet new people.

Grover Beach

The Exploration Station at 867 Ramona Ave. in Grover Beach is hosting its Super Sitter Class presented by the American Red Cross on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Successful completion of the class will earn the participant a Red Cross certificate in baby-sitting as well as the skills and knowledge necessary to become a qualified baby sitter.

Courses include the following: interviewing for a job, diapering and feeding issues, bedtime issues, and first aid and safety.

Participants must be at least 11 years old to take the one-day class, and the fee is $50 with baby sitter kits available for an additional $10.

Classroom size is limited. Preregistration ensures the class is held.
