Prep Roundup: San Luis Obispo ends Righetti’s 22-game win streak

San Luis Obispo High boys soccer coach Johnny Costa had a talk with his team earlier this week and asked them if they were ready to play like champs.

Evidently they got the message.

The Tigers ended defending PAC 7 champion Righetti’s 22-game league winning streak with a 2-1 win on Friday in Santa Maria.

“I tore into the guys a little bit,” Costa said. “I questioned everybody about whether they wanted to be champions. Winning has to be a habit.”

Miguel Perez scored on a free kick in the eighth minute to give the Tigers (12-9-1, 6-4) the lead.

Danual Moon added a second goal for San Luis Obispo just before halftime on a cross from Tyler Davis.

“We came here knowing that we can be better than anybody in the league if we’re all onboard with a championship mentality,” Costa said.

Arroyo Grande 2, Pioneer Valley 1

Christian Garcia had a goal and an assist for Arroyo Grande (16-7-1, 7-2-1 PAC 7).

“It was a huge win for us,” Eagles coach Brad Bowdey said. “We keep climbing in the standings.”

The victory moved Arroyo Grande into sole possession of second place in league while Pioneer Valley (12-5-1, 6-3) slipped to third.

Alex Cossey also scored for the Eagles, while Morgan Wack had an assist.

The win coupled with Righetti’s loss keeps Arroyo Grande in the hunt for the league title. The two teams will meet in their regular season finale Feb. 12.

“The big prize is still out there,” Bowdey said. “Things got a little tighter tonight.”

Atascadero 2, Paso Robles 1

Roberto Orozco scored the game-winning goal with one minute remaining in overtime for the Greyhounds (8-10-5, 2-7-1 PAC 7).

Atascadero’s Alex Aguiar, a recent UC Davis commit, scored on an assist from Derik Schmidt.

Marco Gut scored the lone goal for Paso Robles (9-10-4, 2-7 PAC 7).

GIRLS SOCCER

Paso Robles 3, Atascadero 1

Maddy Cline scored the first two goals for the Bearcats (9-9-4, 3-5-1 PAC 7) in the first half to give Paso Robles a 2-0 lead.

Maria Chavez scored the third goal for Paso Robles.

Jamie Council scored the only goal for Atascadero (4-9-2, 2-6-0 PAC 7) in the second half.

Arroyo Grande 6, Pioneer Valley 0

Mallory Flatebo scored a career-high four goals for the Eagles.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Atascadero 48, Paso Robles 33

Raven Taylor led the Greyhounds (17-3, 9-1 PAC 7) with 18 points in the road win.

Kati Sheldon scored 10 points for the Bearcats (8-13, 2-7 PAC 7), who only scored five points in the third quarter.

Atascadero was 14 for 16 from the free-throw line. Casey Nero had 14 points for Atascadero.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well and I give credit to Atascadero’s defense,” Paso Robles coach Mike Gray said.

Arroyo Grande 68, Pioneer Valley 45

Maddie Carr scored 12 points for Arroyo Grande (17-6, 9-1 PAC 7) in their home win over Pioneer Valley. Madi Ventura, Haley MacDonald and Lindsey Wolf each scored 11 for the Eagles.

Arroyo Grande led 36-22 at halftime.

Righetti 73, San Luis Obispo 61 (2 OT)

Kaylee Williams led San Luis Obispo with 24 points and teammate Hannah Kenny scored 19 points.

Righetti’s Mariah Cooks sank a last minute 3-point shot in the fourth quarter to put the game into overtime.

Both teams scored seven points in the first overtime.

Morro Bay 50, Lompoc 38

Aria Johnson had 22 points, eight rebounds and five blocks for Morro Bay.

The Pirates (16-6, 9-2 Los Padres League) broke the game open in the second half, outscoring Lompoc 32-22. Megan Hansen added 16 points for Morro Bay.

Immanuel 48, Mission Prep 42

Stephanie Darosa led the Royals with 17, and and Bri Harvey scored 15.

The Royals, who shot just 10 of 25 at the free-throw line, were held to 17 second-half points.

“We played without our leading scorer, Jenna Dunbar, who was sick, and Stephanie Darosa and Bri Harvey really stepped up for us tonight,” Mission Prep coach John Krossa said.

St. Joseph 83, Templeton 14

BOYS BASKETBALL

Righetti 73, San Luis Obispo 43

Andy Rowley led the Tigers (9-14, 4-6 PAC 7) with nine points.

Righetti (17-5, 7-2 PAC 7) had a dominating first half, leading 44-17 at the break.

“We didn’t play well in all phases of the game tonight,” San Luis Obispo coach John Jensen said.

Arroyo Grande 42, Pioneer Valley 18

Andrew Hogue and Michael Escobedo led a balanced Arroyo Grande (19-5, 8-2 PAC 7) attack with seven points apiece.

Pioneer Valley made just two field goals in the game.

Lompoc 44, Morro Bay 38

Edward Griley had a team-high 14 points for Morro Bay, which rallied from a 18-point halftime deficit to cut the Braves’ lead to two before falling.

Case Bruton added nine points for the Pirates (8-17, 2-9 LPL).

“The ball didn’t bounce or way down the stretch,” Morro Bay coach Dave Yamate said. “But I’m proud of the effort we gave in coming back.”

St. Joseph 55, Templeton 38

Zach Egger had a team-high 12 points for the Eagles (10-11, 5-5 LPL).

Templeton missed all 19 of their 3-point attempts.

“We just didn’t shoot the ball very well,” Templeton coach Fred Price said. “If we made some shots it’s a different flow to the game.”

Immanuel 59, Mission Prep 53

Kevin Laird led Mission Prep (10-13) with 19 points.

Art Lane scored 11 points for the Royals, who led at halftime but allowed Immanuel to shoot 30 free throws at the Mission Prep Showcase tournament.

“We couldn’t stop them in the third quarter defensively and we put the other team on the free-throw line 30 times, so you can’t win a game by doing that, “ Mission Prep coach Terrance Harris said.

Central Valley Christian 63, Coast Union 34

Eddie Salazar led the Broncos (8-12) with 14 points at the Mission Prep Showcase tournament.

Andy Gordon scored 10 points and had 12 rebounds for Coast Union, which managed just 13 first-half points.
