Keeler scores 30 points, but Mustangs fall by 20 to Aggies

The Cal Poly men�s basketball team lost its third straight game on Thursday night, and its second in a row in Big West Conference play, falling 83-63 at UC Davis.

Senior guard Lorenzo Keeler continued his hot shooting away from Mott Gym this season, pouring in 30 points on a 7-of-14 performance from the floor for the Mustangs (8-13, 5-4). He was 5 of 8 from beyond the 3-point line and 11 of 11 from the free-throw line. No other Cal Poly players netted double figures, though, while UC Davis had four.

UC Davis, which led wire-to-wire and was 24 of 25 at the free-throw line, also benefited from 19 Cal Poly turnovers, while it turned it over on just eight occasions.

Dominic Calegari paced the Aggies (9-13, 5-4) with 20 points, while Joe Harden (19), Todd Lowenthal (11) and Mark Payne (10) were also effective.

UC Davis, which opened the contest on a 7-0 run capped by a Calegari 3-pointer, finished with a 50-percent shooting night.

After leading 35-24 at halftime, the Aggies established their biggest advantage of the night at 68-40 with six minutes and 51 seconds remaining in regulation.

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 7, Cuesta 2

The Cougars committed three errors on the road in their season opener. Cory Ginther suffered the loss.

Ty Muller had a solo home run in the fifth inning for Cuesta, which will look to bounce back at 10 this morning in a contest that was moved up four hours due to the threat of rainy weather.

CUESTA ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

Men�s basketball player Roger Guardia and softball player Megan Donovan were named athletes of the month at Cuesta.

Guardia, a reigning all-Western State Conference honorable mention and a four-time conference player of the week this year, is averaging 20.1 points and nine rebounds per game against WSC opponents. The versatile 6-foot-4 sophomore guard, a native of Spain, is also claiming 2.3 steals per contest in conference play. Cuesta (20-5, 6-1) is ranked No. 17 in the state.

Donovan, a Paso Robles High grad, was 4 for 7 in a doubleheader against Reedley last week, blasting an RBI double in the first game that sparked a three-run inning.

ACADEMIC HONORS

Nine Cal Poly football players were named to the Great West Conference All-Academic Team.

The list was made up of seniors David Fullerton and Carlton Gillespie, juniors Mike Anderson, Bobby Best, James Chen, Dominique Johnson and Marty Mohamed, and sophomores Blake Page and Brandon Roberts.

Roberts, a defensive end, is a 2007 Atascadero High grad majoring in forestry. The team was made up of 48 players maintaining cumulative grade-point averages of at least 3.2.

Meanwhile, Rachel Clancy, a junior guard for the Cal Poly women�s basketball team, was named to the five-player ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 second team.
