The American Kennel Club has released its 2009 registration statistics.
For the 19th year in a row, the most popular dog breed was the Labrador retriever. The German shepherd, Yorkshire terrier, golden retriever, beagle, boxer, bulldog, dachshund, poodle and Shih Tzu rounded out the top 10.

The San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter will hold an adopt-a-pet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the shelter.
All dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, have their shots and are microchipped. The adoption fee is $70 for cats and $95 for dogs. For dogs, there is also a $15 annual license fee. If you choose to adopt a cat or dog that is 8 or older, Animal Shelter Adoption Partners (ASAP) will rebate $35 of the adoption fee. Rain cancels the event.

The Atascadero Horsemen’s Club will meet Feb. 9 at Players Restaurant in Atascadero. An optional dinner begins at 6 p.m., the program begins at 7, and the general meeting starts at 8. Brian Harms, a local leather worker, will give a detailed talk on saddle making, fit and care.

Vineyard Dog Park in Templeton will celebrate its one-year anniversary from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 13 at the park. The ceremony begins at 10:30 with speeches to acknowledge the parks’ supporters and volunteers.
County Supervisor Frank Mecham will recognize two Boy Scouts, Eric Fragione and Collin Fredrick, for the completion of their Eagle Scout projects for the dog park.
Rector Mary K. Morrison of the St. James Episcopal Church of Paso Robles will give the Blessing of the Animals. Treats will be provided. Rain postpones the event to Feb. 20. Dogs must be on a leash for the ceremony.
Vineyard Dog Park is on Vineyard Drive in Templeton, 1.5 miles west of Highway 101. For more information, call 239-4437 or visit www.vineyarddogpark.org. The dog park was financed entirely by donations from dog owners and local businesses, and is maintained by volunteers.
