Businessman Don Idler, owner of the chain of appliance stores that bear his family’s name, was named the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce 2009 Citizen of the Year.
The chain was established in 1954 and operates stores in San Luis Obispo, Atascadero and Paso Robles.
Past chamber chairman Jack Porter praised Idler’s involvement in the community, including his activities with local youth sports and church groups.
Idler, 58, a San Luis Obispo County native and Atascadero resident, graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 1969 and attended Cuesta College. He and his wife, Janis, have two children — daughter Jennifer and son Bryan — and a 2-month-old granddaughter.
Other awards included Keith and Robin Schmidt, the owners of K-Man Cyclery, as business persons of the year; Spencer’s Fresh Markets, business of the year; and Atascadero Loaves and Fishes, organization of the year.

Christian Lazo now in downtown Paso
Christian Lazo Wines has moved its tasting room from San Miguel to downtown Paso Robles at 840 13th St., Suite F.
The winery is owned by the couple Steven Christian and Guadelupe Lazo, who moved with their two children to the Central Coast in 2004 and own 25 acres planted with zinfandel, petit syrah, and barbera vines on the west side of Paso Robles.
The vineyard produced 1,000 cases in 2009.
Christian is a math teacher at Paso Robles High School, and Lazo was until recently a part-time preschool teacher. After she was laid off, the couple decided to focus more on the new tasting room, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays.

Susan Polk Insurance of San Luis Obispo has been given a silver award for its commitment to keep its employees healthy by Healthyroads, a prevention and wellness management subsidiary of American Specialty Health Incorporated.
The award was announced at Healthyroads’ first Fit Company Awards earlier this month. The firm says it has committed to keeping its staff healthy by paying for gym memberships for all employees and providing morning pots of green tea (instead of coffee) as well as mid-afternoon fruit salad for snacking.
