Prep Roundup: McMillan, Norris lift Atascadero

Troy Norris and Sam McMillan led the Atascadero High boys basketball team with 15 points apiece in a 44-37 PAC 7 home win over San Luis Obispo on Wednesday.

The Greyhounds (12-6, 2-3 PAC 7) limited San Luis Obispo to nine or fewer points in all but the third quarter where the Tigers mustered 11.

The win marked the first Atascadero victory over San Luis Obispo since a 62-60 Greyhounds win in January 2008. Daniel Hansen led the Tigers (5-13, 1-5 PAC 7) with 10 points.

Atascadero had lost three straight league games entering Wednesday’s matchup.

“This was a big win for us tonight, and we really needed it especially after our last three losses in league,” Atascadero coach Jerry Tamelier said.

Morro Bay 51, Santa Maria 43

Luke Holzschuh led Morro Bay (7-12, 2-4 Los Padres League) with 18 points and had nine rebounds.

After being held down by the Santa Maria defense for most of the game, the Pirates scored 18 fourth-quarter points to put the game away.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Morro Bay coach Dave Yamate said.

Morro Bay’s Edward Griley scored 16 points and had nine rebounds and nine blocked shots.

Cabrillo 55, Templeton 39

Jordan Hattar led Templeton with 10 points, and Dakota Oropeza added eight.

The Eagles (7-9, 2-3 LPL) turned the ball over 26 times and shot 29 percent from the floor.

“It wasn’t one of our better games as a team,” Templeton coach Fred Price said. “Some of it was Cabrillo’s pressure, but we missed some open opportunities as well.”

Cabrillo put the game away in the third quarter with a 14-8 run that left Templeton trailing by 14.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Morro Bay 52, Santa Maria 17

The Pirates (12-5, 5-1 LPL) got a game-high 23 points from Megan Hansen, and Ciara Ramos added 10.

“(Megan and Ciara) are carrying the load well, but I’ve been pleased with the emergence of some of our younger kids as well,” Morro Bay coach Cary Nerelli said.

Hannah Gilbert added eight points and seven rebounds while Ramos also added five rebounds and four assists.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Morro Bay 12, Lompoc 2

Megan Long had a season-high seven goals for the Pirates, who picked up their first league win.

Morro Bay (3-8, 1-2 LPL) got a game-high 14 saves from Dani Churchill.

The Pirates outscored Lompoc 9-0 in the second half after leading by just one goal at halftime.

“We were playing great defensively, but offensively we weren’t finishing our opportunities,” Morro Bay coach Jim Waska said. “We were much more efficient in the second half and stuck the ball in the back of the net.”

RAINOUTS

The San Luis Obispo boys soccer team’s PAC 7 match at Atascadero was rained out and will be made up Monday. The girls soccer game was also rained out and will be played Monday. The boys game will be in Atascadero and the girls game in San Luis Obispo.

Also rained out were Paso Robles’ soccer and basketball games with Pioneer Valley, which have all been rescheduled for Monday.

The boys soccer game will be played at 5:30 p.m. while the girls will play at 6 p.m. and both basketball games will be played at 7:30 p.m. The girls soccer and basketball games will be in Paso Robles, and the boys basketball and soccer games at Pioneer Valley.

The Mission Prep at Coast Union basketball games scheduled for Wednesday in Cambria were canceled because of a leak in the Coast Union gym.
