Dingo the ‘gentleman’ wants another family

‘Dingo is a classic dog — loyal, affectionate, and loves to chase a ball. For most of his five years he lived with — and loved — four kids, another dog and the family cat. Dingo is housebroken, knows some basic commands and takes treats gently from your hand.

“Dingo rides well in a car and was a gentleman when I drove him to the Dave Congalton radio show. He was equally refined in the studio. Dingo came up and met Dave and the engineering staff and then lay down at our feet.

“At the shelter, Dingo likes to be with people and never misses an opportunity to chase a ball or go for a walk. In so many ways, Dingo is the perfect family dog, though he did make a mistake in his past.

  Coldhearted behavior
  I was heartbroken reading about Chuck Hoage, who finally found his lost dog, Annie, only to lose her again because of a glitch at animal services and the refusal of the people who adopted her to give her back to him (“Sad story of two families and one dog,”â€ˆAug. 8).
  Perhaps these people have never had a dog before and don’t understand that it isn’t a matter of ownership, but of family and love. Annie has been Hoage’s family for seven years. He has fed, groomed, trained, played with and loved her for all that time.

  Not Hoage’s fault
  There is a lot of misinformation circulating about the circumstances under which Annie ran off. Please visit http://tinyurl.com/ReturnAnnie and listen to the recordings of the radio interviews with Chuck Hoage.
  Annie was waiting in the back of Hoage’s parked truck on his ranch while Hoage fed his horses. Hoage followed all of the procedures as prescribed by Animal Services called in and reported Annie missing and called back daily to check the hotline.

  The South County man whose missing dog was adopted by someone else is not likely to get her back unless the new owner changes his mind, the man in charge of county animal services said Wednesday.

  Keep dogs in cab
  Regarding Annie the dog: If there is one lesson to be learned here, it is that dogs belong in the truck cab, not in the bed. At the very least, by law, they are required to be tied down.
  That being said, it is incredibly selfish and mean-spirited to keep Annie apart from the person who loves, raised and cared for her all her life.

“Several months ago, Dingo went with his family to a campground. He was loose when a stranger approached and went to open the camper door — Dingo bit him. I suspect Dingo thought he was protecting his family; however, it’s likely the park ranger was coming to tell his owner to put Dingo on a leash.

“So now Dingo has one black mark on his record, and we, at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter, are hoping someone will give Dingo the chance to be a family dog again.

“Dingo lights up whenever he sees me — no doubt wishing I’d take him on another car ride. Hopefully, one day, he’ll jump into his new family’s car and head to his life-long home.”

The adoption fee is $70 for cats and $95 for dogs, plus a $15 county license fee for dogs if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents. The adoption fee includes spay or neuter, basic vaccinations, microchip, eligibility for a free veterinarian check, a new collar and ID tag, and a carrier for cats.
