Prep Roundup: Local football players honored

Four San Luis Obispo County high school football players earned all-CIF Southern Section divisional honors Monday.

Paso Robles running back Robbie Burbank and Atascadero offensive lineman Dalton Spinas were selected to the all-Northern Division team. Meanwhile, Nipomo teammates Kevin Britt, a receiver, and Duane Hanna, a linebacker, were both all-Northwest Division selections. All four are seniors.

Burbank rushed for 1,802 yards and 21 touchdowns on 254 carries, and caught seven passes for 90 yards as the Bearcats went 5-5.

Spinas was part of an offensive front that paved the way for 263.9 rushing yards per game and 36 rushing touchdowns, helping to lead the Greyhounds through a 7-4 campaign that included a playoff berth.

Burbank had already been named the PAC 7 league’s Offensive Back of the Year, with Spinas taking home the league’s Lineman of the Year award.

Britt caught 53 passes for 893 yards and 11 touchdowns while Hanna compiled 134 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The Titans went 8-4, making it to the divisional quarterfinals. Britt was a first-team all-Los Padres League choice at receiver, while Hanna was named the LPL’s Defensive Back of the Year.

WRESTLING

Atascadero 64, Arroyo Grande 10; Atascadero 76, San Luis Obispo 6

The Greyhounds remained undefeated with their two league victories Tuesday.

Arroyo Grande forfeited five matches and Atascadero heavyweight Levi Kenyon pinned Nick Pappas in 45 seconds.

Arroyo Grande’s Ruben Basulto, in the 171-pound weight class, had the Eagles’ only win against Atascadero with a 24-5 major decision against Andre Garfield. At 152, Josh Lowe pinned his opponent in 48 seconds for Atascadero (9-0, 4-0 PAC 7).

San Luis Obispo forfeited 12 matches against the Greyhounds. Atascadero’s Josh Osorio defeated San Luis Obispo’s Joey Schallenger 16-1 at 119.

Morro Bay 41, Santa Ynez 26

Morro Bay’s Zach Haworth pinned Mike Azebedo in 37 seconds.

Patrick Kelly (140) and Aaron Mininni (152) were also victorious for Morro Bay (4-0, 2-0 Los Padres League).

Paso Robles 70, Nipomo 6; Righetti 41, Paso Robles 28

The Bearcats (2-1 PAC 7) benefited from 10 Titans forfeits in the first match.

At 160 pounds, Cesar Delgado collected a pin in 4:52. Also adding a pin for Paso Robles was Harley Holt (171, 5:25), while Kevin Garcia claimed a 12-0 major decision at 130.

Against Righetti, Paso Robles got wins from Justin McAfee (a heavyweight who pinned his opponent in 5:45), Jeremiah Vaughn (189, pin in 37 seconds), Delgado (pin in 1:25), Robbie Standley (103, takedown in overtime) and Ryan Miller (125, 9-0 major decision).

BOYS BASKETBALL

North County Christian 51, Valley Christian 41

Caleb Katches had a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds while Josh Feld scored his 1,000th career point for the Crusaders (8-8, 2-0 Coast Valley League).

Feld, who finished with 14 points, also had a team-high 13 rebounds.

Maricopa 54, Coastal Christian 53

Zachary Shultz led Coastal Christian (2-6, 0-2 CVL) with 18 points, and Curtis Henry followed added 12.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

North County Christian 57, Valley Christian 51

Cristy Scarson led North County Christian with 26 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.

The Crusaders (7-5, 1-0 CVL) trailed by one entering the fourth quarter but outscored Valley Christian 16-9 down the stretch.

Brianna Feld scored 14, and Kelsey Paulus had 12 rebounds for the Crusaders.

Laguna Blanca 53, Coast Union 36

Katelyn Lorenz had a team-high 15 points to lead the Broncos.

“Lorenz did a good job of being aggressive and making some difficult shots,” Coast Union coach Jerry Gibson said. “As a team we just didn’t shoot the ball very well.”

Laguna Blanca jumped to a 24-10 lead after one quarter and Coast Union never recovered.

BOYS SOCCER

Cabrillo 4, Templeton 1

Craig Pennington scored the lone goal for Templeton (1-10, 0-3 LPL) in the 73rd minute. Jonah Yamagata had 13 saves for Templeton.

GIRLS SOCCER

Cabrillo 4, Templeton 1

Serena Hughes scored the lone goal for the Eagles (3-3-2, 2-1 LPL), who trailed 3-0 at halftime.

Coast Union 3, Orcutt Academy 1

After an early Orcutt goal, Coast Union (3-3) got the equalizer from Jasmin Bucio in the 10th minute.

Dalia Zarogoza gave the Broncos the lead in the 34th minute before Bucio’s second goal added some insurance in the 45th.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Arroyo Grande 11, Atascadero 3

Katie Sverchek had a season-high four goals for the Eagles (15-1, 4-0 PAC 7), whose normally high-powered offense was stifled early by Atascadero.

Arroyo Grande outscored the Greyhounds 7-2 in the second half to put the game away.

“Atascadero did a great job defensively to hold us down through the first half,” Arroyo Grande coach Steven Allen said. “But Katie Sverchek was a sparkplug for our group and we got going to start the second half.”

Meghan Anderson and Caitlyn Taylor each added two goals for Arroyo Grande.

Nipomo 8, San Luis Obispo 7

Down by two goals at halftime, the Titans outscored San Luis Obispo 5-2 in the second half.

Julia Tatarian led Nipomo (3-13, 1-4 PAC 7) with three goals, and Sara Clark added two.

The Tigers (8-7, 3-1 PAC 7) were led by Kennedy Peters’ three scores, while goalie Andie Judson made a game-high 14 saves.
