Prep roundup: Bruton, Griley shine for Pirates

The future is looking increasingly bright for the Morro Bay High boys basketball team. The Pirates, who have just one senior on their roster, thumped visiting Santa Ynez for a 79-50 Los Padres League win on Monday night, thanks in large part to two standout performances from underclassmen.

Case Bruton, a 6-foot-2 freshman wing, had five 3-pointers and poured in a game-high 30 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while teammate Edward Griley, a 6-5 sophomore forward, had 25 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks.

“They both played well in the flow of the offense and pushed the ball well,” Morro Bay coach Dave Yamate said. “We got a lot of transition buckets. I was pleased from that standpoint.”

Carlo Green, a junior guard, added 11 points for Morro Bay (6-10, 1-2).

“We’ve been inconsistent,” Yamate said of Morro Bay’s early-season experience. “We’re a young team learning what the varsity level is all about. This was a game where I feel like we pulled together a strong 32 minutes, and we need to build on that.”

“Fortunately for us, defense is a constant,” Morro Bay coach Cary Nerelli said. “We played consistently good defense while trying to find our range in the first half. The girls were patient and came out with much more energy in the second.”

Aria Johnson led Morro Bay (9-5, 2-1 LPL) with 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Megan Hansen had 11 points and Ciara Ramos nine. Hannah Gilbert added four points and 11 rebounds.

GIRLS SOCCER Santa Ynez 9, Morro Bay 0 Morro Bay (0-3 LPL) trailed 4-0 at halftime. Emily Ineman had a hat trick and an assist for Santa Ynez.

BOYS SOCCER Templeton’s home match against St. Joseph was postponed.
