Poly received a gold ranking for an increased number of bicycle racks on campus, an increase in the number of bicycle commuters, the addition of one new vanpool vehicle, and the adoption of the car sharing program Zip Car on campus.
The award recognizes organizations that have taken steps in their efforts to offer alternatives for their employees to driving alone.
The transit research center singled out 27 companies, institutions and individuals nationwide as part of its 2009 Race to Excellence awards.
Cal Poly ranks alongside Stanford University and Virginia Tech and was the only campus of the California State University system recognized, university officials said.

North County
Authorities are investigating a commercial burglary where more than $40,000 in goods was stolen from a commercial yard in the North County.
Various tools, welders, a generator, a floor jack, a plasma cutter and a pressure washer were stolen after the unknown suspects cut locks on several storage containers, investigators said.
The items were removed sometime between 10 p.m. Dec. 13 and 7 a.m. Dec. 14 along Highway 46 East near Shandon, according to the county Sheriff’s Department.
Officials disclosed the burglary information on Thursday.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects involved in the burglary, investigators said.
Tips can be given by phone to the Sheriff’s Department at 781-4553, or to remain anonymous, through Crime Stoppers at 549-STOP; by texting the words “Slotips” plus your message to 274637; or through www.slotips.org.
