Barry Bonds’ son could face simultaneous prosecution for alleged crimes in San Mateo and SLO counties

Menlo Park police said Tuesday they are gathering more information for a potential assault charge against the son of home run king Barry Bonds and expect to resubmit the case to San Mateo County prosecutors by the end of the week.

Prosecutors have held off from deciding whether to file criminal charges against Nikolai Bonds, 19, until Menlo Park police can complete the follow-up work they requested, Assistant District Attorney Karen Guidotti said.

Nikolai Bonds was arrested Dec. 5 after he allegedly threw a metal doorknob at his mother, Sun Bonds, during an argument at her home on the 1000 block of Valparaiso Avenue in Menlo Park, police said. Sun Bonds, 45, was not injured.

After reviewing the case prosecutors sent it back to police on Dec. 9 for follow-up, Guidotti said. She said she does not know what additional information prosecutors sought.

This week, a Menlo Park detective began gathering the information requested by the district attorney’s office, police spokeswoman Nicole Acker said. Acker declined to elaborate but said police expect to resubmit the case to prosecutors by Friday.

In addition to allegedly throwing the doorknob at his mother, Nikolai Bonds spit in her face, destroyed $400 worth of property including picture frames and vases, and blocked the door so she couldn’t leave, Acker said.

Police booked Nikolai Bonds on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, assault and battery, vandalism, false imprisonment and obstructing and resisting an officer, officials said. He posted $50,000 bail the same night and was released, Guidotti said.

Nikolai’s father, Barry Bonds, played for the San Francisco Giants from 1993 to 2007, and holds baseball’s all-time home run record. Barry and Sun Bonds divorced in 1994.

Guidotti said Nikolai Bonds was assigned a court date of Jan. 12 when he bailed out of jail and will not be required to return to court before then, regardless of whether charges are filed.

Guidotti said an unrelated warrant for Bonds out of San Luis Obispo County would probably not affect any potential case in San Mateo County.

Bonds was cited on July 9 by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo police for being a minor in possession of alcohol, said Jerret Gran, chief deputy district attorney for San Luis Obispo County.

Bonds was released and ordered to return to court on Aug. 13 but failed to appear, Gran said. A judge issued a $1,000 warrant for his arrest that was still active as of Tuesday.

Guidotti said the cases in both counties likely could be prosecuted simultaneously as long as Bonds is out of custody.
