College Basketball: Cal Poly downs South Dakota State for third straight win

Keeler, Odister and Donahue all have big games as the Mustangs win for the first time in six games on the road this season

Freshman guard Kyle Odister’s 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining propelled the Cal Poly men’s basketball team to a 73-66 win over South Dakota State on Tuesday in Brookings.

Odister, who finished with 17 points, broke a 66-66 tie to give Cal Poly the lead for good.

The win, Cal Poly’s first on the road this season in six tries, was their third consecutive overall.

“We have learned from each of our games on the road this season and this time it paid off with our first road win,” Cal Poly head coach Joe Callero said in a new release.

“We limited the Jackrabbits by extending our defense and that caught them a bit off guard. We changed things up on them near the end of the game and went with a little press and that gave us an advantage.”

The Mustangs (3-5) held South Dakota State to 35 percent shooting overall. Cal Poly shot 48 percent, including 43.8 percent from 3-point range.

Senior guard Lorenzo Keeler led all scorers with 21 points, including four free throws in the game’s closing seconds to seal the victory.

Sophomore forward Will Donahue had his fourth double-double of the year, scoring 13 points and collecting a game-high 10 rebounds.

Cal Poly outrebounded South Dakota State 41-31. The Jackrabbits were led by Clint Sargent’s 16 points.

The Mustangs will play at Wisconsin at 6 tonight before returning home to face Montana State at 7 p.m. Monday.
