The public is invited to help as students prepare to decorate their float for the Jan. 1 Rose Parade in Pasadena.

Decorating will take place in the Rose Bowl parking lot in Pasadena, starting with dry materials on Dec. 26 and continuing with fresh flowers until Dec. 31.

The cost to participate is $1 per day, which buys volunteers lunch and dinner for the day.

Those wishing to come to Deco Week (Decoration Week) should make sure to wear something they won�t mind getting dirty, as well as closed-toed shoes.

Los Osos

Two top state officials will be at Monta�a de Oro State Park on Saturday at 11 a.m. to observe the final installation of photovoltaic panels at the park�s Spooner Ranch Visitor Center.

State Parks Director Ruth Coleman and Conservation Corps Director David Muraki will watch as members from the corps� Los Padres Center in San Luis Obispo put the finishing touches on 31 panels and support structures in three separate locations in the park.

The solar system is expected to generate most of the park�s electrical needs.

The installation is part of a parks department initiative to lower its carbon footprint and reduce operating expenses. The corps will install panels at Morro Bay State Park in 2010.

The Atascadero Loaves and Fishes is launching its annual Christmas basket project and is seeking residents of Atascadero, Santa Margarita, Templeton, Creston and California Valley who need assistance.

The nonprofit organization is teaming up with Coats for Kids, Toys for Tots and the Atascadero Kiwanis to provide families with enough food to prepare a holiday meal.

It will also offer an opportunity to select a warm winter coat for each member of the family and toys for children.

Interested families can sign up for the program at 5411 El Camino Real today and Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A photo identification and proof of address are required at the time of registration.

The baskets, coats and toys will be distributed Dec. 17 at the National Guard Armory in Atascadero. For more information, call 466-7186.
