More to it than length

In response to Bob Johnson’s comments (“Petition begs question,” Nov. 12): Thanks for the number crunching to help some people realize that the length of the petition is not a realistic measurement of the number of people who want soccer fields and parking lots.

Granted, some better parking and small restrooms would be nice, and at least they would be quiet (a plug for Sylvia Hanna). I’d like to know how many of the taxpayers (that ultimately will be paying for this) will utilize soccer fields. I believe that the soccer fields are a cheap option, and so that is why they are on the top of the Cambria Community Services District list.

Speaking of list, whatever happened to utilizing the results of the survey that was done about four or five years ago? Those results should count for something.

As I recall, a community pool was in the top three wishes in the survey results, with a lot more people having the good sense to write it in on the survey than the number that signed that silly petition. Does CCSD need to do another, better survey?

Kids need help

A little girl’s letter:

Dear Mr. Jesus, I just had to write to you. Something really scared me when I saw it on the news. A story ’bout a little girl beaten black and blue. Jesus, thought I’d take this right to you.

Dear Mr. Jesus, I don’t understand why they took her mom and dad away. I know that they don’t mean to hit with wild and angry hands. Tell them just how big they are, OK?

Dear Mr. Jesus, they say that she may die. I pray the doctors can stop the pain. I know that you could save her and take her up to the sky so she would never have to hurt again.

Dear Mr. Jesus, please tell me what to do, but please don’t tell my daddy that my mommy hits me too.

Please don’t let them hurt your children. We need love and shelter from the storm. Please don’t let them hurt your children. Won’t you keep us safe and warm?

Open a little wider

One of the things I have loved about living in a small town like Cambria is how we all bond together to help one another in times of need. I have had a friend for over 10 years who is less fortunate than most of us. In fact, he is homeless.

He never asks for anything and is very appreciative whenever something is done on his behalf. He has been self-supporting for many years, doing whatever it takes to live independently.

Lately he has had severe pain from his four remaining teeth and is in dire need of a dentist. Since he has no money, I called two dentists to see if they could help him out pro bono. The answer I received from both was “no.”

I then called my dentist in San Luis Obispo, Dr. Peter Nelson, and was told to bring him in and they would help him. The teeth were extracted in 15 minutes and at no charge.

Dr. Nelson has no connection to our community. He recognized a fellow human being in pain and extended himself. It’s as simple as that.

Dr. Nelson recently called and said he would make Art’s dentures just for the cost of material and not charge for labor.

Now that is way beyond being nice.

A fund has been started at Lily’s Coffee House, 2028 Main St., if anyone wants to contribute and help one of Cambria’s own.

There when needed

On this Thanksgiving Day, I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our Cambria paramedics and firemen who responded in a swift, efficient and caring way to my call for help Sunday, Nov. 15.

Also, to the two “angels” from the Crisis Intervention Team who came to French Hospital at 2:30 a.m. to drive me home. Bless you all,
