Local Roundup: Cal Poly announces signings of five wrestlers

Three wrestlers from Gilroy high schools are among the five prep wrestlers who have signed National Letters of Intent to wrestle collegiately at Cal Poly.

Jesse Delgado and Dominic Kastl are the two Gilroy High wrestlers in the signing class.

Delgado was the California state champ last season at 112 pounds. He is expected to wrestle at 125 pounds at Cal Poly.

Kastl, expected to compete at 157/165 in college, placed seventh in the CIF state meet last season at 160 pounds while attending St. Francis High where he was a prep teammate of Drew Meulman, the third wrestler from a Gilroy high school to sign with the Mustangs. Meulman, expected to compete at 285 in college, was the CIF state runner-up at 215 pounds last season after a seventh-place finish in 2008.

The other signees are Tucker Armstrong from Kenton Ridge High in Springfield, Ohio, and Travis Gallegos from Foothill High.

Armstrong, expected to wrestle at 149 at Cal Poly, captured the Ohio state division II championship at 125 pounds as a sophomore at Graham High School in St. Paris, Ohio, then transferred last year to Corona del Mar High in Newport Beach but did not compete in the postseason because a death in the family.

Gallegos has earned a pair of third-place finishes at the CIF state meet at 152 pounds and projects as a 165-pounder in college.

San Luis Obispo girls tennis team to play on the road

The San Luis Obispo High girls tennis team learned Wednesday its CIF-Southern Section Division III semifinal playoff match would be on the road rather than at home.

The Tigers (19-1) moved into the semifinals with a 9-9, 81-76 games tiebreaker win over Valencia on Tuesday but had to await the outcome of a match between Pacifica of Garden Grove and South Pasadena to find out if they�d be playing at home or traveling.

South Pasadena and Pacifica not only tied 9-9 Tuesday, but also in games, 64-64, so the two met again Wednesday, with South Pasadena prevailing in a �super tiebreaker,� 10-8. Had Pacifica won, San Luis Obispo would�ve played at home.

San Luis Obispo�s match at South Pasadena will be at 2 p.m. today.

Cuesta women's basketball team falls to Porterville

Despite going 18-of-18 from the free-throw line, the Cuesta College women�s basketball team lost 72-56 to visiting Porterville, as Porterville�s Alex Shew poured in a game-high 29 points.

Raleigh O�Brien had a team-best 22 points for the Cougars (1-3). Cuesta center Erika Wilhelm, of Morro Bay High, added six points and a team-best seven rebounds in defeat.
