Prep Football Roundup: Righetti rallies to beat Arroyo Grande, win PAC 7

The Arroyo Grande High football team let a nine-point halftime lead slip in a 25-21 loss to Righetti on Friday in Arroyo Grande.

The win gave the Warriors (8-2, 5-0 PAC 7) an outright league championship.

Russell Perkins had 133 yards on 23 carries for the Eagles (7-3, 3-2 PAC 7) who will go to the playoffs as the No. 3 seed from the PAC 7 following a three-team tie for second place with Atascadero and Paso Robles.

Quarterback Matt McAustin finished 7 of 17 for 83 yards with an interception while his counterpart, T.J. Jordan, finished 15 of 23 for 156 yards.

The Eagles got a 96-yard kickoff return from John Alexander to tie the score at 7 in the first quarter. They took a 21-12 halftime lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Anthony Cabreros.

Nipomo 23, Templeton 8

Eric Penningroth had 17 carries for 156 yards, scoring on runs of 75 and 7 yards to lead the Titans.

Josh Correia, who now holds Nipomo’s single-season passing yardage record, was 16 of 25 for 128 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Britt, who also broke most major school receiving records, had eight catches for 74 yards and a score.

But head coach Russ Edwards said he was more pleased with the play of his defense than anything else.

“Defensively we did a great job,” Edwards said. “Templeton couldn’t get anything going in the first quarter.”

Linebacker Duane Hanna had a game-high 16 tackles for the Titans (7-3), who will find out their first-round playoff opponent Sunday. “We’re excited to find out who we’re playing on Sunday,” Edwards said. “We just want to continue the best season in Nipomo history.”

Templeton scored with four minutes remaining on a 2-yard run by Tyler Gray.

St. Joseph 42, San Luis Obispo 14

Vance Cramer led San Luis Obispo (3-7) with 44 yards on 7 carries.

Cramer scored the first of the Tigers’ two touchdowns on a 5-yard run in the second quarter.

Jake Lacy added a second touchdown for the Tigers in the fourth quarter on a 19-yard pass from David Murilo.

Mission Prep 49, Orange Cove 26

Kevin Laird led Mission Prep (7-3, 5-0 East Sierra League) with 78 yards on 13 carries en route to the league championship.

Laird had two touchdowns for the Royals, including one 60-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Mission Prep led 14-12 at halftime and dominated the second half.

“The kids played very well,” Mission Prep coach Brady Lock said. “They came out in the second half did a great job controlling the ball and scoring. This was a great team win. Our goal was to win the championship.”

Pioneer Valley 48, Morro Bay 16

Gardner Kennedy led Morro Bay (5-5, 2-5 LPL) with 36 yards on four carries. Kennedy also passed for 109 yards and one touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Cody Chavez opened the scoring for the Pirates with a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter.
