College Roundup: Early run powers USF over Cal Poly

Dior Lowhorn had a game-high 22 points as San Francisco cruised by the Cal Poly men’s basketball team 73-62 in the debut of new Mustangs head coach Joe Callero on Friday in San Francisco.

The Mustangs, who trailed 14-0 after five minutes, were led by sophomore guard Jordan Lewis’ 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

Sophomore forward David Hanson added nine points and six rebounds.

Cal Poly shot 35.8 percent from the field.

San Francisco, which hit its first six shots, finished shooting 48.9 percent.

Junior college transfer Will Donahue had a team-high eight rebounds in his first game for the Mustangs.

The Dons (1-0), who led by as many as 21 points, also got 15 points apiece from Kwamie Vaughn and Angelo Caloiaro.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Oregon State 71, Cal Poly 61

Junior forward Kristina Santiago had team-highs of 17 points and six rebounds in the Mustangs’ season-opening loss in Corvallis, Ore. Santiago made 7-of-11 shots and added two steals.

Senior forward Becky Tratter scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Mustangs but fouled out in 27 minutes of play.

Cal Poly got as close as two points on a layup by senior guard Brittany Lange with just under 13 minutes to play. Junior guard Rachel Clancy closed the gap to three with five minutes remaining on a layup, but the Mustangs were outscored 9-2 down the stretch.

Oregon State (1-0) was led by Talisa Rhea’s game-high 20 points, and Kirsten Tilleman’s 19 points and eight rebounds.

East L.A. 45, Cuesta 42

Raleigh O’Brien led Cuesta (1-1) with 18 points in the loss at the Bakersfield Tournament.

Jayme Salim had nine points for the Cougars.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cuesta 2, Allan Hancock 0

The Cougars (7-11-3) finished their season on a dominant note, outshooting Allan Hancock 22-1 in the win.

Emily Barbera scored with four minutes remaining in the first half to give Cuesta the lead for good.

With four minutes remaining, Kayla Nevius scored on a pass from Jaime Brooks to give Cuesta its final tally.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Cuesta 13, Ventura 12, OT

The Cougars (20-11) picked up their first win of the season against Ventura when it mattered most — in the playoffs.

Lawrence Bardelli scored seven goals, and Jake Akins added three for the Cougars, who are now guaranteed of at least a fourth-place finish in the Southern California region.

“It’s a big deal for us because we’re in San Luis Obispo,” Cuesta head coach John Marsh said. “We’re not in the hotbed of Southern California but we’re getting better and we’re learning every day.”

The Cougars will play second-seeded Long Beach City this afternoon and will play either in the consolation match or the championship match Sunday night in Pasadena.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Poly 3, Pacific 2

The Mustangs got a team-high 15 kills from freshman middle blocker Jennifer Keddy in a 25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-7 win over Pacific in Stockton.

Junior middle blocker Dominique Olowolafe added 13 kills on a match-high .458 hitting percentage and sophomore outside hitter Catie Smith had 11 kills.

Freshman setter Anuhea Keanini had a match-high 52 assists for Cal Poly (8-19, 4-10 Big West Conference), which has won two straight after dropping seven in a row.

Mallori Gibson led the Tigers (16-10, 6-8) with a match-high 19 kills.

Moorpark 3, Cuesta 0

Nicole Crump led Cuesta (7-13, 4-5 Western State Conference) with a team-high 10 kills in its 25-15, 25-17, 25-13 loss. Joanna Hogue had 25 digs for the Cougars, and Kaitlyn Henry made six blocks.
