Pirates girls team takes the title while Shipe wins the boys race

closeMorro Bay High won the girls team title at the Los Padres League cross country finals at River Park in Lompoc on Wednesday afternoon, while Templeton’s Savannah Camacho finished first individually.
Meanwhile, Morro Bay’s James Shipe won the boys race as an individual.
Camacho, a sophomore who finished second at the San Luis Obispo County meet last week, won on the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 25 seconds.
For first-place Morro Bay — which entered the race ranked seventh in the CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division — Rachael Jelstrom was fourth in 18:59, followed by seventh-place Macey Burgeson (19:41) and ninth-place Lizzy Hoyt (19:57).
The Pirates won with 64 points.
“The girls raced the entire way, and really moved up well in the last mile,” Morro Bay coach David Jackson said.
Eighth-ranked Templeton, which was without Kaley Hook, who suffered a foot injury at the county meet, finished third as a team with 72 points.
Kasey Urman was sixth at 19:30 for the Eagles, who also advanced to the upcoming sectional prelims at Mt. San Antonio College on Nov. 14, along with Morro Bay.
On the boys side, Morro Bay — ranked No. 2 in the division — finished second, trailing only Cabrillo at the Lompoc-hosted event. Cabrillo had 34 points to Morro Bay’s 47.
Shipe, who sat out the county meet in order to prepare for the LPL competition, won in 15:30.
“James ran within his comfort zone today,” Jackson said.
He was followed by teammates Bryan Carroll (in fifth at 15:53) and P.J. Van Beurden (seventh, 16:08).
Templeton’s boys, who finished fifth with 132 points and missed advancing by one point, were led by 10th-place Bob Vanderplas, who finished in 16:17.

In their season finale, the Pirates almost came all the way back from a 6-0 first-quarter deficit, just missing a potential game-tying shot with about 15 seconds to play.
“We were down 6-0 and didn’t quit,” Morro Bay coach Jim Waska said. “We did a tremendous job of coming back.”
Elliot Kaser led Morro Bay with six goals, and Tyler Fraser added three in defeat.
Dane Eckert made 18 saves for the Pirates (1-16, 0-7 LPL).
