Cal Poly’s Joe Gatel, Mark Conover and Kayleigh Tyerman have been honored by the Big West Conference for their cross country successes.
Gatel, who set a course record at the Riverside Farm Course in winning the men’s individual Big West title Saturday, has been named the men’s athlete of the year.

Conover, who guided the Mustangs to their seventh straight team title Saturday and 10th overall title, is the men’s coach of the year. It is the eighth time Conover has been named the men’s coach of the year, a league record.
Tyerman, a freshman who was second in the women’s individual race Saturday, is the freshman of the year.
Cal Poly was the only Big West school to have more than one award winner.
The other award winners are UC Davis’ Sarah Sumpter, women’s athlete of the year; UC Riverside’s Emmanuel Ngala, men’s freshman of the year; and UC Santa Barbara’s Pete Dolan, women’s coach of the year.
Cuesta athletes of the month
Kelly Barman and Dan Colbert and are the Cuesta College athletes of the month for November.
Barman, a freshman, won the women’s award for her cross country excellence. She’s won three of the four races she’s entered this season, including winning the Western State Conference individual title last week.
Her win at the WSC meet vaulted the Cuesta women’s team from third to second place in the final standings, marking only the fifth time Cuesta has finished that high since joining the circuit in 1983.
Colbert, a freshman wrestler, has established himself as one of the top heavyweights in one of the state’s most competitive divisions.
He was 4-0 at the Southern Dual Tournament and led the Cougars to a fourth-place team finish.
Colbert is ranked eighth in the state with an 11-6 record. His 11 wins rank second on the Cuesta team and all six of his losses this season were to wrestlers ranked in the top four spots.
