‘Every occupied kennel at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter holds an untold story on how the animals arrived here. Many, like Gracie, were obviously loved pets. In Gracie’s case, someone trained her so she knows her basic commands and has good house manners. They also developed in her a passionate love of people.
“Today, Gracie — a lovely, spayed 4-year-old yellow Labrador retriever — is homeless and needs surgery.
“She came to the shelter as a stray with an injured knee and no ID tag. Because her surgery will cost $1,600, no adopters are stepping up to the plate, though many have said they would adopt Gracie in a heartbeat if she weren’t injured.
“So now Gracie must rely on the generosity of strangers if her surgery is to happen. To help, please donate to the shelter’s Animals Requesting Friends fund (ARF), which is currently depleted.
“Tax-deductible donations can be made at the shelter, or checks can be sent to: SLO Animal Services — ARF Fund, P.O. Box 4110, San Luis Obispo, CA 93403.

The Animal Services shelter is at 885 Oklahoma Ave., off Highway 1 in San Luis Obispo.

The adoption fee is $70 for cats and $95 for dogs, plus a $15 county license fee for dogs if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents. The adoption fee includes spaying or neutering, basic vaccinations, a microchip, eligibility for a free veterinarian check, new collar and ID tag and a carrier for cats.

The Feline Network of the Central Coast hosts an Adopt-a-Cat event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays at Petco at the Madonna Plaza in San Luis Obispo.
Cats and kittens are spayed or neutered, tested and vaccinated before adoption. The adoption fee is $60 for one or $80 for two, and includes a free vet examination.
The organization also offers financial assistance of $45 toward a female cat and $25 toward a male cat, to help residents who live in the city of San Luis Obispo and in South County areas with the cost of spaying and neutering.
