closeGRAND FORKS, N.D. — The North Dakota football team had three unanswered scores in the second half, and Cal Poly quarterback Tony Smith was intercepted twice in the final four minutes as the Fighting Sioux were able to hand the Mustangs their first Great West Football Conference loss and dash their playoff hopes as well today.
In front of an all-time low 6,711 at the Alerus Center, North Dakota (4-4, 2-1 Great West) overcame a three-point halftime deficit to win 31-17.
Needing to win their final four games of the season just to make an argument for an at-large berth to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, Cal Poly took an early 10-0 lead and held on for a 17-14 halftime advantage, but the Mustangs (4-4, 1-1 Great West) could get almost nothing going on the ground offensively and were completely stagnant in the second half.
Smith did have two touchdown passes to running back Jon Hall, and receiver Dominique Johnson had a 60-yard catch and run on a screen pass.
