State park may get finishing touches

Planners are likely to approve upgrades to Harmony Headlands, including parking, an information kiosk and new safety railings

County planners today are expected to approve plans by State Parks to add some final amenities to Harmony Headlands State Park.

The scenic oceanfront park is a popular recent addition to the state park system. It opened to the public 11 months ago, five years after it was acquired by the state.

The planned improvements will take place at the park entrance adjacent to Highway 1, about five miles north of Cayucos. Amenities to be added include a 16-space parking lot, an informational kiosk, interpretive signs, a fee collection tube and new safety railings on a bridge just inside the park.

The item is part of the Planning Commission�s consent agenda that begins at 9 a.m. today in the county Board of Supervisors chambers.

District parks Superintendent Nick Franco said the work could be completed within the next couple of months, depending on final permitting and staffing constraints. Although not considered controversial, the project could be appealed to the county Board of Supervisors and the California Coastal Commission.

Completing the work during the state�s budget crisis is possible because few out-of-pocket expenses are required, Franco said. The work will be performed by parks staff and volunteers from the Cayucos Land Conservancy.

The 784-acre park features a cross-country hiking trail to the coast and a bluff-top trail overlooking the ocean. The park is run under a cooperative agreement between State Parks and the Cayucos Land Conservancy.
