  The commentary by Victor Davis Hanson on Aug. 11 titled “What if the president liked businesspeople?” just struck me as the most inane thing I’ve read in a long time.

  Support good works

  The cost of health care infuriates Joe Tarica. (Tribune, Aug. 20) But wait. There are reasons why that bill for his wife’s emergency room tetanus shot was a real “ouch.”

  Joe’s self-reliant wife couldn’t go to her doctor or to an urgent care business because it was late on Sunday. Only a hospital emergency room was available. And it is — 24/7 as that annoying phrase goes. Trained doctors, nurses, lab techs, fancy machinery, always at the ready. The annual cost is laid off against the fraction of walk-ins who are insured or self-insured.

  Cost of carelessness

  The Tribune article by Joe Tarica commenting on the high cost of an emergency room visit was a worthy commentary (Aug. 20), but on some reflection, that ER visit was a real bargain when it comes to life’s lessons.

  The usual instructions that come with power equipment suggest the operator wear heavy protective clothing, steel-toed boots (or at least proper shoes) as well as safety glasses. In other words, dress for the task at hand.

  Stop the killing

  The 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, will be here soon. With all due respect to those who died, their family and friends — which doesn’t include the long-term death toll from those exposed to toxins in the monster dust clouds — the United States and coalition forces have been at war in Iraq and Afghanistan killing and dying.

  I went online to look at casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan; deaths in both countries total more than 900,000, with civilian deaths at least 392,979. Statistics can be twisted, and the media can slant the news, but every day, we continue to add to those numbers.

  The real bully

  Lon Allan’s article on Walmart stated the retail store “wants to use the ballot box to muscle its way into communities” and claims the store is a “major bully when it comes to locating itself in communities that may not want the big-box store.”

  Mr. Allan is clear he is not in favor of a Walmart store in Atascadero. However, 65 percent to 70 percent of Atascadero voters made it clear they do want a local Walmart when an anti-Walmart group used the ballot box and put the issue to a vote.
