Junior Burgos tied the all-time Cal Poly men’s soccer single-game record for goals Wednesday night during the Mustangs’ 3-2 win over visiting Cal State Fullerton at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Burgos, a junior midfielder, had the sixth hat trick in school history, scoring all three of his goals in the first half.

Cal Poly men's basketball team routed at Cal State Fullerton
He scored unassisted on a free kick from the right side, 30 yards out, in the fifth minute, on a penalty kick in the 19th minute and on a David Zamora pass through the box converted into a shot from the left post into the right corner of the net in the 25th minute.
Cal Poly improved to 3-1 in Big West Conference play and 5-7-1 overall. The Mustangs also moved into a tie atop the Big West standings.
The Titans staged a late rally, as Jamall Farquharson tallied unassisted in the 64th minute on a rebound off a Cal Poly defender from 6 yards out. Farquharson then assisted Johnathan Birt in the 66th minute, but Cal State Fullerton (6-6-1, 2-2 Big West) couldn’t find a tying goal.
Cal Poly won despite being outshot 18-11; the Titans fired 10 shots on goal to the Mustangs’ five.
Patrick McLain made a career-high seven saves for Cal Poly, while Trevor Whiddon made two saves for the Titans.
Six yellow cards were issued in the match, with Cal State Fullerton called for one offsides.
MEN’S WATER POLO
Ventura 12, Cuesta 8
The Cougars were outscored 3-2 in every quarter.
Lawrence Bardelli tallied a team-high three goals for Cuesta (10-9, 2-1 Western State Conference), while Hunter Hamaker added two. Atascadero High grad Karl Weit scored once, and Arroyo Grande High grad Thomas Martin made four saves.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
Ventura 16, Cuesta 7
The Cougars (8-15, 1-2 WSC) fell behind 4-0 early at the Buena High pool, 2 meters shorter than the 25 typically played at the college level. (Ventura’s normal pool was down.)
Paso Robles native Morgan Thompson had a team-best two goals in defeat. Goalkeeper Aubree McAtee, in her first appearance in two weeks after an injury, made nine saves.
