  A childish story revival

  In March of 2011, The Tribune, with Bob Cuddy’s help, decided to write some stories about the San Luis Obispo trash can ordinance. Now, in September, it has decided to resurrect the topic by publishing photos of the homes of all our City Council members.

  The photos don’t reveal some gross violation of neighborhood decency in my mind. Seems almost childish to me to offer up a visual of the exact location of these elected officials’ homes (while I do admit I was also a bit amused at the childish responses of some of those council persons, if they were quoted correctly).

  Do business locally

  There was an optimistic indication of economic recovery at the recent Central Coast Economic Forecast, one that makes the “Buy Local” message we hear often particularly relevant.

  The real message is that if you support local businesses, you support your community. Several studies show that buying local helps independent businesses. Every dollar you spend here in San Luis Obispo County is going to other people who spend their dollars here. It creates a sustainable and independent economy.

  Christmas is all about traditions. As Dec. 25 nears, many of us will decorate trees, rattle sleigh bells and assemble with families, devouring ham and exchanging sweaters, just as our ancestors did before us.

  But for the past quarter of a century, another yuletide tradition has emerged: The annual viewing of “A Christmas Story.”

  “I think for this generation— and maybe ours too — it’s kind of replaced ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ ” said Mike Mesker, a San Luis Obispo resident who appears in the stage version of “A Christmas Story” at the San Luis Obispo Little Theatre.

  Why the ‘yes’ vote?

  I think many of us would agree with Patrick Thomas’ statement, “I want to see ‘Made in the USA’ on the products that I buy” (Sept. 15).

  In a related item in The Tribune, “How Your Lawmakers Voted” from the week ending Sept. 9, there was information on a vote to modify charter schools bill HR 2218 entitled “Made in America,” requiring the use of U.S. products in a bill funding the construction of charter schools in U.S. public education.
