I am happy to report that several of the animal shelter pets featured in this column have found new, loving homes.

A month ago we featured Kevin, a dog who was going to have his leg amputated and needed a new home. After running Kevin’s story, I heard from several readers who were interested in what happened to him — he has found a new home in Nipomo with Kathy Sorrells, who sent me an update.

“I first heard about Kevin on the radio; he was a Pet of The Week on Cat Country 96.1. He sounded so cute; I thought that he’d get a home right away. Then I saw your column a while later and started to realize that being an amputee was going to make it hard for him to find a home. Although we weren’t looking for another dog just yet — we already have three, all over 11 years old — we decided to give the shelter a call.

“At the time I called … he was scheduled for surgery. … I went to visit him about 10 days after his surgery. He was very sweet and loving. I called my husband, Jim, to confirm, and we both agreed that we wanted to adopt him. …

“It has taken a little time for Kevin (now Bentley) to adjust to his new home, but not long considering what he went through. Our biggest challenge is teaching him that our two cats are not there for his amusement. He is getting much better with them. …

“He loves to take shoes and clothes (mine) and deposit them around the house and backyard. Luckily he has started taking both shoes to the same location, making it a little easier to find a matching pair!

“Recently we went for a two-and-a-half-mile walk around the community park in Nipomo and he easily kept up with our dog Sadie. I was hoping to tire him out but he still wanted to play catch when we got home. Missing leg? What missing leg? I believe Bentley will be a cherished member of our family for life.

“I think that the volunteers at Animal Services provide such a valuable service. By fostering Bentley, and getting his story out there, they gave him a chance at a new life!”
