Meeting focuses on removal of debris from 49 fire

Placer County officials are sponsoring a meeting Wednesday regarding fire debris removal for residents and business owners who suffered losses from the 49 fire.

The fire was reported last Sunday afternoon and was contained Tuesday.

It destroyed 63 homes and three businesses. Another six businesses and three homes were damaged.

The meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. in the Hearing Room of the Community Development Resource Agency building, 3091 County Center Drive in Auburn.

The meeting will focus on only those who have fire loss, county officials report. Representatives from Placer County Environmental Health and other departments will discuss cleanup requirements.

County officials warn debris and ash must be handled with proper protection, including proper protective clothing and equipment.

Placer County's Local Assistance Center will reopen Tuesday and remain open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Wednesday

The center is in the Placer County Government Center, 11517 F Ave. in North Auburn.

In response to the fire, Wells Fargo and Co. is contributing $10,000 to support the efforts of the Sacramento Sierra Chapter of the American Red Cross.
