closeFor Gayle Hurlburt and William Kennedy, the Central Coast is nothing short of paradise.
The couple moved to the county from Colorado more than a month ago, but they were smitten by the area last year after renting for three months in Nipomo’s Black Lake community.
“We rented a place and explored the area further,’’ said Hurlburt, 56. “We went to Solvang, and we had been to Cambria and we went to Montaña de Oro. It was fun and attractive to us. We like the small-town feel of the Central Coast.’’
Despite the higher cost of living and some concerns about health-care options for Hurlburt, a cancer survivor, they decided to make the move with their two golden retrievers, Shadow and Otis. They chose Trilogy, a community that has targeted boomers with its various amenities, including a golf course, swimming pool, spa and restaurant.
They purchased a two-bedroom, single-level home, a change from their 4,300-square-foot house with a basement in Windsor, Colo.
The pair, former owners of a basement finishing company, decided to relocate when Kennedy, 61, retired this year from their business and after their Colorado home sold faster than they anticipated. Hurlburt, a Web site developer who works from home, is semi-retired.
“I have established clients,’’ Hurlburt said. “I can’t let them down by retiring.’’
That doesn’t mean the couple doesn’t make plenty of time for leisure. They’re both cyclists and golfers, kayakers and lifelong learners who take classes through Cal Poly.
“In general, the county offers about everything we would want,’’ Hurlburt said.
