  Classic cars to pass through SLO County today

  Dozen of classic cars will make their way south through San Luis Obispo County today, the third and final day of the Mille Miglia North America Tribute. Patterned after the Italian Mille Miglia, or 1,000 miles, the rally began Wednesday in Santa Barbara, then made its way north through Paso Robles to Monterey for the night. Drivers went up to San Francisco on Thursday, and drove back to Monterey last evening. Today they head south on Highway 1 through Big Sur to Cambria, then on through San Luis Obispo to highways 101, 166 and 33 to Ojai, and back up 101 again to Santa Barbara. All the cars, including Alfa Romeos, Austin-Healeys and Ferraris, were built from 1927 to 1957.

  A coalition of law enforcement agencies focused its attention on Paso Robles during the three-day Labor Day weekend that resulted in 35 arrests and nearly 30 traffic tickets.

  Operating under the designation “Safe Streets” , officers from the Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, San Luis Obispo County Probation Department and Paso Robles Police Department focused their enforcement efforts on “contacting, identifying and arresting gang members,” according to a news release from Paso Robles police.

  People were arrested or cited for drug violations, probation and parole violations, arrest warrants, drunken driving, reckless driving and driving without a license, among other things, according to police.

  The Amgen Tour of California cycling race will skip the Central Coast in 2012, bypassing former host cities Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo.

  But that doesn’t mean race owner AEG didn’t approach those cities.

  Officials from both cities received bid packages in the summer inviting them to join the seventh annual race. But the amount of fundraising involved — about $140,000 — led San Luis Obispo County’s two largest cities to wait another year.
