  ‘Brush!’ brings dental care to kids

  A new mobile dental health clinic will be at Dana Elementary School in Nipomo on Thursday as part of an effort to provide school-based oral health education and prevention for first- through third-graders.

  The program — called “Brush! Brush! Brush!” — is sponsored by the Community Health Centers of the Central Coast. Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, will attend. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to noon at the school at 920 W. Tefft St.

  The clinic will allow CHC to provide oral health education, dental cleanings, fluoride varnishes and sealants to more than 1,600 additional uninsured and low-income children in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, according to a news release from Capps.

  The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County has added Ellen Curtis to its 17-member board of directors.

  Curtis is owner and managing partner of Recipe, a San Luis Obispo-based food and beverage marketing company.

  Curtis will use her marketing background and social media planning strategies for fundraising efforts and to heighten awareness that more than 44,000 people in San Luis Obispo County go hungry, according to a recent news release by the Food Bank.

  A uniform solution

  I read with delight the Nov. 3 letter from Ken Koenen that listed simple steps to fix schools that cost no money.

  The one that stuck out in my mind the most was that all students wear uniforms. If you have not driven by any of the schools, you should. The high schools are the worst. The way students are allowed to dress is outrageous and parents are most at fault for allowing their children to walk out the door dressed in that manner. Schools also are at fault for allowing students to enter school dressed the way they do.

  Cal Fire bring it on

  So Paulina Burton is suing Cal Fire because she says firemen were “dancing and undressing” and making “inappropriate comments” and “telling of sexual exploits.” Really? Firemen clowning around? Shocking! One would think Ms. Burton couldn’t really be serious in her pursuit of damages because of these antics.

  It would seem to us that if one were in a voluntary position and did not appreciate the mischief of a group of firemen, one would no longer volunteer in that position. Personally, from our standpoint, this sounds like the usual horseplay of a group of men who have one of the most dangerous and stressful jobs possible.

  In past years, sixth- graders at Branch Elementary School in Arroyo Grande have raised money to pay for items at the de Groot Nursing Home for Children, stocked the local food bank, and collected donations to build and fill a shed at the Prado Day Center for the homeless in San Luis Obispo with supplies for children in need.

  This year, Cheryl Little’s class brainstormed and came up with a new idea for a community service project, something Little has done with her class for the past 15 or so years.

  “So many kids in the class, including myself, have been touched by cancer and we decided it would be our theme this year,” she said.
