SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Riverwalk Vista makes sure its guests don't sleep alone. Each room comes with a betta fish. And although it's not a conversationalist, it adds a homey feel.
The fish is one of the touches that make a stay at the hotel memorable. It's one of San Antonio's lesser-known treasures, a 17-room inn steps from the River Walk at Losoya and Commerce streets.
The hotel prides itself on magnificent views of the River Walk and the Tower of the Americas, naming each room after the view it offers. Paintings depicting what the streets of San Antonio once looked like line hallways and guest-room walls.
Rustic benches, original wood floors, antique portraits, quilts and wall hangings add to the historic ambience of the Dullnig Building, which was constructed in 1883 and first used as a grocery store.
The hotel has preserved the building's historic charm and updated it with modern conveniences. Guest rooms offer slate showers (with rubber ducky), plush towels, DSL service, a CD/DVD player and a feather bed.
The Vista can accommodate any arrival time, but the innkeepers are available between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., after which a night watchman arrives. Access is granted at the front door through guests' personal numeric codes.
A limited-service hotel is not for everyone, but the Vista offers a continental breakfast, and cookies and wine are served in late afternoon. Visitors also can use a nearby fitness center.
