If you have plans to travel in the coming months, you should be looking for fares now and acting fast when you see low-cost tickets.
We're seeing sales that last through the end of summer, but travel during this busy season will be very crowded, and finding availability for those discount fares will be difficult. If you can avoid summer travel, you should have good luck finding cheap seats for travel through mid-June and September and October.
AirTran is offering a sale to all of its destinations for travel through Oct. 3, and other carriers are matching. Sample one-way fares from Dallas include $79 to Charleston, S.C.; $104, Newburgh, N.Y.; and $109, Freeport, Bahamas. Add taxes and fees. Tickets must be purchased by Tuesday, with a 14-day advance. Fares are cheapest for travel Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and are not available Sundays.
If you're headed to Florida, Daytona Beach is the cheapest option at $84 one way, plus taxes and fees. Travelers can save on hotels, dining, attractions and shopping with the Spring Family Beach Break coupon booklet from the visitor's bureau. Most offers are valid through May 24. Contact: 1-866-845-1993; www.daytonabeach.com/familybeachbreak.
Daytona Beach is 75 miles from Walt Disney World. If you're headed there, you could save by flying to Daytona, especially if you're traveling with the family.
If you want to travel to London this summer, consider treating yourself to business-class flights. British Airways launched a sale, and round-trip fares from London to Dallas start at $3,168, including the fuel surcharge. Taxes and fees are additional. Other carriers have matched the sale, but if you want to travel nonstop, look for flights on British Airways and American. Tickets must be bought by April 26 for travel July1 through Sept. 2. Compare these fares to the short-notice price as high as $8,000.
Qantas has an online sale for travel to Australia and New Zealand. Tickets must be purchased by Friday for departure May 7-29 to Australia and now through May 30 to New Zealand. Sample round-trip fares from Dallas include $1,048 to Auckland and $1,198 to Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. Add taxes and fees. Restrictions apply. Sale fares also are available for departure on other dates, but they're $100 to $300 higher than these fares. See www.qantas.com, choose North America from the drop-down menu under "Your Region" then click on "Show All" under Web-only Deals.
