Swing surrounded by vineyards at Hunter Ranch Golf Course (4041 Highway 46 East, 805-237-7444), rated four and a half stars by Golf Digest magazine. Greens fees from $30-$78. Golf Getaway packages with stays at area accommodations are available.
There are a few even more affordable options in the area. The Links Course of Paso Robles (5151 Jardine Road, 805-227-4567) is designed in the Scottish links style. Greens fees $16-$34. Paso Robles Golf Club (1600 Country Club Drive, 805- 238-4722) used to be a private country club but is now open to the public. Greens fees $15-$27. Down Highway 101 in Atascadero is Chalk Mountain Golf Course (10000 El Bordo Ave., 805- 466-8848), a county course. Greens fees $9-$34.
Short on time but still want to get out? Try the six-hole River Oaks Golf Course (700 Clubhouse Drive, 805-226-2096), designed to help players work on their short game. The course can be played in about 50 minutes. Or try the three tee shots, each from a different approach angle, on each hole to string together a full round.
