Several letters have been written lately supporting the ruling of an outside arbitrator that will take the average pay of a San Luis Obispo police officer into six-figure territory. It is no surprise that the Police Officers’ Association (POA) supporters would defend this expensive ruling; many appear to be friends and family, live outside of SLO and won’t have to pay the cost.
“Annual world water use has risen sixfold over the past century, more than double the rate of population growth. But water supply … is the same now as it was 10,000 years ago. Based on U. N. population numbers, Credit Suisse estimates that by 2025, nearly two-thirds of the world population will live in countries where water will be in very short supply,” reports Financial Times.

Q: Lance Leage was one of my cousins. Why would you include the information about his 20-year-old court history in the article on his death while hiking? The family couldn’t see how that would have had any bearing whatsoever on the reported circumstances of his death, which was a fall. Should it become relevant, then I can understand it. The family was very hurt by the inclusion of that information.

In response to “Fires in California devastate wildlife, sensitive habitats” (July 12) by Tribune staff reporter David Sneed and the opinion expressed that a century of fire suppression has resulted in an “unnatural” buildup of “fuel” in chaparral and that this is the primary cause of the massive fires of the past few years: This is not the case in chaparral, though it does hold true in other ecosystems, such as dry ponderosa pine forests in the southwest.
The state’s budget is dismal. We’ve borrowed about as much as we can from the future to pay for today. There is general resistance to increasing revenue — i. e., taxes— and to reducing spending.

Imagine a beautiful summer Sunday in scenic downtown Arroyo Grande. A family is crossing the street, Doc Burnstein’s ice cream cones in hand, heading to the bandstand for the afternoon concert in the park. They scramble across the road as eight oil tanker trucks, each full of 60,000 pounds of thick tarlike oil from the Huasna oil field, rumble through town belching exhaust. This scenario is currently under consideration by San Luis Obispo County and the city of Arroyo Grande, and will likely happen unless the community voices opposition.
